History of gunk:
With both the goth and punk subculture firmly grounded, there was left a group of people who had qualities of both subcultures and didn't really fit into either one really well. These group of misfits created the Gunk (Goth+pUNK) subculture.
How to become a Gunk:
Not all gunks like these, but many do. My advice is that do what you like and let others label you. But I can't stop you from trying to fit into any particular subculture.

~Tormenting "preps" or "popular" people (prep and popular are often interchangeable in a gunk's vocabulary)
~Purposly freaking anybody out.
~Dying one's hair (red, blue, and purple seem to be popular, but other colors can also be seen)
~Hanging out with friends
~Listening to music (gunk bands are found below)
~Just zoning
~Watching anime
Gunks are usually hyper, silly, rebellious by nature, and usually go between being extremely angry and extremely sad. They are also usually poetic by nature. They also usually thinks society is corrupted (punks) and that there's no hope for the world (goths). They usually have a group of friends who are a mix of goths and punks, and if they're lucky enough to find some, other gunks. Gunks are also usually anarchists, but it is not necessary to be part of the subculture.Gunks also usually don't give a fuck what anyone thinks of them, and when someone calls them something that is generally considered an insult, the gunk usually bows and thanks the person.
A gunk usually wears a brightly patterned or black shirt with a pair of jeans, although sometimes not. It also usually appears the gunk does not care about their clothes, because they are ripped, torn, or stained. Think about mixing punk and goth clothes together, and you should get an idea. Also, gunks tend to wear tons of rings, bracelets, necklaces, and any other kind of jewelry they can find.
Although rare, stereotypical gunks DO exsist. They only wear goth and punk clothes (whereas gunks just happen to like them and wear other clothes too), go out and buy tons of jewelry (gunk's jewelry is usually whatever they find and they wear so much of it because they're too lazy or forget to take it off), dye their hair just to freak people out (gunks dye their hair because they actually prefer the other color better), only listen to "gunk" music (see below....) and try to scare people just for the sake of scaring them (gunks scare people who annoy or scare them).
Here are some Bands that Gunks like: Blink-182, Green Day, Linkin Park, Nirvana, Metallica, Michelle Branch, Third Eye Blind, Marilyn Manson, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, Puddle of Mudd, Nickleback, Stained, Ozzy Osbourne, Atom and His Package, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, AC/DC, and Against Me. If you haven't hear music by these bands, then I seriously suggest you do, whether you are gunk or not. There are only a few of the many gunk bands out there.
When it comes down to it, being a gunk is about freedom. Freedom of music, freedom of expression, freedom of clothes, freedom of life. Gunks just do whatever they want with nobody to tell them what to do. They're feirce, protective, and accepting all at the same time. That is why there are so many gunks in the world today.
